Manali - One of the most beautiful adventure destinations of India, Manali is basically a small town in the Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh. Manali is situated in the central parts of Himachal Pradesh, Manali is 32 km from Kullu valley, 280 km north of the state capital Shimla and 108 km from Mandi.

Manali is located at an altitude of 2050 meters above sea level and is spread along the banks of the river Beas.

Climate

The Banon Family
An Irish soldier, Captain A.T. Banon, settled in the Manali during the 1850s. He married a lady from Garhwal and planted the first apple orchard in the valley. A farsighted man, he brought in a variety of fruit plants to the Kullu Valley and pioneered the fruit industry in the region. His descendants built roads, bridges, generated their own electricity - which, incidentally, was also supplied to the circuit house during the late Indian Prime Minister Pandit Nehru's visits. It was the Banons who established the tourism industry here by launching the first guest house in the Kullu Valley.

Hadimba Temple

This temple, also known as Dhoongri Temple is situated about 1 km from Manali. The temple is dedicated to Hadimba- the wife of Bhima. Bhima is one of the Pandava brothers who visited this place during their exile.

This four story wooden temple is located in the middle of a forest called the Dhungiri Van Vihar. Maharaja Bahadur Singh built the present wooden pagoda-like temple in 1553 AD after earlier structures were burnt down by forest fires.

Standing on a stone platform surrounded by old deodar trees, the three-tiered temple is crowned with pennants, brass bells and a trident. Carvings of animals, plants and folk deities adorn the temple, while hunting trophies hang over its entrance. Inside the shrine is the brass icon of the goddess, surprisingly tiny compared to the huge temple structure and the legendary prowess associated with her. The shrine is within a natural cave formation dominated by huge rock. A set of enlarged footprints on the rocks is believed to be of Hadimba, herself. In mid-July the idol from old Manali is brought to this temple for a major festival. As part of the frenzied celebrations, several animals including a buffalo and a goat are sacrificed to the goddess. The blood falling on the stones is channeled to the mouth of goddess Hadimba.

Manu Rishi Temple

Manali is known for its shiny gompas or Buddhist monasteries. This Gompa dominates the Tibetan area around the bottom of the Mall in Manali. The Tibetan refugees built the Gompa in the late 1960's. The Gompa is covered with brightly coloured frescoes and a mid size Buddhist statute. It also carries a list of the martyrs killed in occupation of Tibet of 1987 to 1989. Inside the brightly painted prayer hall is a statue of Shakyamuni (form of Buddha). The monastery is maintained through donations and the sale of carpets woven by the lamas within the temple workshop.

A smaller gompha near the market has a large gold-faced image of Buddha, which is best viewed from its first floor verandah. Monks can be seen printing prayer flags in the open terrace.

Rahala Waterfall

is located at a distance of 27 km from Manali. It is a mesmerizing waterfall where the River Beas cascades in showers from a height of 50 metres. It is a beautiful picnic spot for the nature lovers. Rahla means a halting station. In the olden days sages, saints and pilgrims preferred to stay here overnight during there journey to Lahaul.

Naggar

Roerich Art Gallery is situated 2km uphill from Naggar bus stand. The gallery originally was N.K. Roerich's residence, later turned into the art gallery by his son Svyetoslav Roerich.
The art gallery is run as Roerich Heritage Museum by a trust formed by the governments of Himachal Pradesh and Russia. Prime Minister of India is the chairperson of this trust.
Nicholas K. Roerich embraced stupendous qualities. He was a master artist, a scholar, a writer, an archaeologist and an explorer. His reverance for the Himalayas inspired him to paint thousands of paintings of the Himalayas, sentinels of India.
A few of his excellent creations have been housed at the Roerich Art Gallery, in Naggar. The gallery preserves original works of Roerich on the Himalayas, quotations from Roerich and valued words of the visitors and the admirers.
The gallery remains open from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M., except Mondays.

Manikaran town is situated in Parbati Valley at a distance of 45km from Kullu. The beautiful Parbati Valley is situated to the north- east of Kullu. Manikaran is famous for hot water springs that cure rheumatic pains. Manikaran is renowned for Gurudwara and Ram temple that bestows free lodging and food. Manikaran is famous for its hot water springs gushing out from below the rocks. Temperature of water varies from 88°C to 94°C. Presence of radium is one of the main reasons given by a German scientist behind the hot water springs. Rice can be cooked in twenty minutes in the hottest of springs.

Paragliding is organized in Kullu valley throughout the year at Solang Valley, located 14 kms from Manali and other locations like Marhi, Fatru, Bijli Mahadev etc. There are generally two kind of flights :
1. Short flights : The client is taken 100 - 150 mts up the slope and takes a flight along with the pilot in the two seater paraglider. The flight lasts for approximately 60 - 90 seconds.

2. High flying : Approximately 20-30 minutes flight and arranged at Fatru, Kothi and Bijli Mahadev. Mainly for experienced pilots who have done short flights.

Skiing

Skiing in Manali can be organized at Solang Valley, located 14 Kms from Manali from January & February and at Dhundi, Gulaba, Marhi or Rohtang from March to to mid June depending upon snow condition. The clients would be required to have warm clothes, gloves, woolen caps and sun glasses. They should be fit enough to carry the ski equipment (minimum 8 kgs) up the slope to the skiing point. Skiing as a fun activity can be done for a day.

Hadimba Devi fair

Though almost all the festivals are celebrated with zest and devotion, Dussehra gets special attention all over the valley. The festival is celebrated in the month of October during the autumn season when the rest of the country celebrates Durga Puja and Vijaya Dashami. The Hadimba Devi fair is another important event in this place and a rather big fair is organized in the Hadimba Devi temple complex.
